OLD BURYING GROUND : WE’VE GOT AN APP FOR THAT Free Smartphone Audio Tour

April 14, 2017 by Pecan Tree Inn

Beaufort, NC has a new cool tool check this out! #historicalbeaufort #newapp #beaufortnc #mycrystalcoastnc

“After a minute of listening, this is not just a stone. This is a human being. It is unforgettable.”
Increased activity in Beaufort’s historic Old Burying Ground happens every year in the springtime thanks to the glorious outburst of color from the azalea filled grounds.  Visitors and residents enjoy strolling among the live oak trees and old grave markers in the cemetery that was featured in the book, 100 Most Romantic Places in North Carolina, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The weathered tombstones chronicle the heritage of Beaufort and the surrounding coast with graves of soldiers from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War, along with star-crossed lovers, and famous privateers.
This year, our visitors will also be able to hear stories about those who are now buried in these special gravesites as they read the markers revealing the stories of Beaufort’s early inhabitants that included sea captains, soldiers, privateers, ministers, doctors, young mothers and babies. Many of the stories have been passed down from generation to generation. Down load the app free from your phone “uniguide”

Depression Bead Demonstration

August 5, 2016 by Pecan Tree Inn

130 Turner Street, Beaufort, NC
(252) 728-5225

August 6, 2016
1 – 3 pm

As part of the Beaufort Historical Association’s Living History series, Gigi Koehler will conduct a depression bead demonstration on Saturday, August 6th from 1:00-3:00 pm followed by a depression bead workshop on Thursday, August 11th at 10:00 am in the Beaufort Historic Site’s Welcome Center, 130 Turner Street.

Ms. Koehler will demonstrate the way depression beads are made out of rolled paper, and then strung together to create unique necklaces and bracelets.  Although they originated during the Victorian Era, the beads got their name because women and girls during the Great Depression made jewelry out of paper instead of purchasing more costly items.  Despite the inexpensive source, the paper beads added a vibrant pop of color to the wearer.
